Event «Returning the Names». Budva, 29.10.23

The «Returning the Names» event, initiated by Memorial, takes place simultaneously in different parts of the world on the eve of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions. On this day, people take turns reading the names of the repressed individuals — their first name, patronymic, surname, age, profession, and sentence.

This year, the event took place at Pristaniste, Montenegro. We read 220 names of people repressed in the Soviet Union who had some connection to Yugoslavia, including 7 Montenegrins.

Families directly affected by Soviet repressions, for whom this became a personal tragedy, participated in the event. We are thankful to everyone who was with us on this day. This event reminds us of an important principle: there is nothing more valuable than human life. The state has no right to take people’s lives.
